Destination Wedding in Ireland: Why Couples from Spain Choose It
Ireland as a destination wedding location — castles, coast and soft northern light, from the perspective of a Spanish documentary photographer.
Ireland has something that few wedding destinations in Southern Europe have: honest light. Not the sharp Mediterranean sun that creates hard shadows at noon, but the soft, diffuse light that comes through clouds all day and makes documentary photography look effortless.
Couples who marry in Ireland often tell me the same thing after: they did not expect to love it as much as they did. The landscape is brutal and green. Castles are affordable and genuinely atmospheric. And the people — guests and locals alike — create warmth that photographs naturally.
The most photographed areas for weddings are County Clare (the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher), County Kerry (the Ring of Kerry coastline), and County Wicklow (the 'garden of Ireland', close to Dublin). All three are within easy reach of international airports.
For Spanish couples planning a destination wedding in Ireland, the main challenge is weather. August is the safest month. But honestly, a grey Irish morning that clears into soft afternoon light is one of the most beautiful things I have photographed. Do not be afraid of the weather — let it become part of the story.
