Best Seasons for Wedding Photography in Spain
When to marry in Spain for the best light, weather and atmosphere — from a photographer who works here year round.
Spain is not a single climate. The north — Asturias, Galicia, the Basque Country — has Atlantic weather: mild summers, green winters, rain spread evenly through the year. The south — Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia — has Mediterranean weather: dry summers, warm winters, almost no rain from May to September.
For documentary photography, the best light comes in the shoulder seasons: April–May and September–October. The sun is lower, the shadows are softer, and golden hour lasts longer. Midday sun in July creates beautiful landscapes but produces flat, harsh portrait light.
If you are marrying in Asturias, any month works photographically. The green landscape is at its best in spring. Summer brings longer evenings. Autumn adds colour. Winter is rare for weddings but produces the most dramatic coastal conditions.
My personal favourite is late September in northern Spain: warm enough for outdoor celebrations, cool enough for comfortable dancing, with a golden late-afternoon light that lasts until eight o'clock.
